Integral in Africa: Africa through Spiral Dynamics

Dr. Rica Viljoen reflects on how various Spiral Dynamics codes manifest in Africa, during this keynote address. Specific emphasis is placed on conceptualising the forgotten spiral dynamics code: Beige, and how it manifests in this continent. It is argued that without integrating Beige, humanity cannot become second tier. Further, a unique celebration of Purple is presented. This Code is uniquely positioned as the key to humanity. Red, is repositioned as a positive and important niche that enables Jungian Individuation. A colorful exploration of how Blue, Orange, and Green come together to weave diversity of thought in the oldest continent, follows. Ultimately, dr Viljoen will reason that second-tier thinking is alive and well in Africa and that just maybe the world can remember deep wisdom from African ontology and philosophy in an attempt to embrace Yellow and Turquoise. During the conversation the following six crucial features to be focused on: • The law of the Spiral • Multiple Intelligences • Integrative Structures • The Power of the Paradox • The rule of SOME • Synergistic/Value Management. Unique reflections of the first Integral African Conference, held in 2019, will also be shared. The next sister conference of the Integral European Conference is planned for 2020. In the worlds of Jung: “if father Europe and mother Africa unite, the divine child called transformation is born.” An attempt will be made to showcase the age-old soul of diverse Africa.

Spiral Dynamics in Action: a case creating magice

In this interactive session emphasis will be placed on how PURPLE enables social systems to remember SOUL and by celebrating their routes, an anchored-ness is presented that is indeed magical and even spiritual. In search of solutions to transient global or contemporary problems of existence, remembering our Purple may indeed by the key to relatedness. A case study of Interstate Bus Lines (IBL) is presented where a strategy with a Purple logic was implemented with sustainable business results. IBL is seen as the only South African company that successfully implemented co-determination in a way to share leadership with organised labour and create a future that everybody desires. Various examples of Purple from all over the world will be presented and through group conversation the audience will be invited to find traces of Purple in self and their societies. Although an academic article accompanies this interactive session, the emphasis is on self-exploration, reflexivity and group conversation in order to recognise Purple residue in us all.

Gaudi, Da Vinci and Picasso – Truly Turquoise?

During this interactive event of two and a half hours, the participants are invited to step out of their shoes and put on the thinking of Gaudi, Da Vinci and ultimately Picasso. An art-based experience is facilitated to remind participants not only of their inner child, but how it feels to co-create, to have boundaries and what psycho-analytical defence mechanisms are at play in their own psyche. Ultimately, the experience is facilitated through the lens of Spiral Dynamics and emphasis is placed on being Turquoise.

Industrial Theatre Ghana applying Spiral Dynamics

The presenters will focus their presentation on the impact of applied Spiral Dynamics in Industrial Theatre context. The “Cantata” – (Ghanaian word for Industrial Theatre), was used as an integral instrument in a worldwide Mining Organisation to embed company values, teamwork, safety as paramount value and care culture. The play was two and a half hours long and included big group facilitation and “safety skits” that employees could associate with and discuss. The impact of the Cantata was significant and total engagement from employees were evident from the start. The duration of the Cantata was five weeks and total number of employees that attended in excess of 8000. Role players in the community like the Queen Mother, Chiefs of surrounding villages and their linguists attended the opening ceremony and had opportunity to see the play. The incredible significance and success of the play was orchestrated and written by Dr Rica Viljoen from Mandala Consulting using the theory of Spiral Dynamics and she and her team involved the Management of the Mining Company and their Organised Labour leaders in conjunction with the Community Leaders. René – co-presenter is a Director at Metamor Consulting – Training and Development division of Mandala Consulting, project managed the Cantata and co-facilitated the process using Spiral Dynamics as the applied theory.

WANT TO BECOME YELLOW Remember the forgotten code

Treating Beige as the orphan child of the spiral, denying its existence and ignoring the weaving in of the unique intelligences Beige has to offer, may create substantial holes in the tapestry of spiral that we as humanity are weaving together. The lingering question remains – how can we try and be turquoise or coral if large parts of the globe face life conditions that can only be met with Beige, Purple, Red and in a lesser degree Blue and Orange thinking. As we still cannot agree that there is something like global warming; although there is devastating evidence to the effect; how can we claim that Green (F) life conditions will enable S-mechanisms (Green) to switch on in the brain? How can we claim to be Green if we are not daily, constantly busy with earth consciousness and healing humanity? As humanity, we will not move forward (or is it backwards, upwards or downwards) if we ignore the life conditions that daily face the majority of emerging economies, places where there still is poverty, diseases such as malaria and war stricken countries. The paper attempts to conceptualise Beige as a critical pre-requisite of being Yellow.
