I was born in 1958 in Budapest, Hungary. I was originally an electrical engineer and worked in this profession for 20 years, partly as the leader of my private company. In the 2000s I changed and founded Ursus Libris publishing house, which publishes books mainly in the fields of Eastern and Western religions, psychology, and mindfulness, including some works by Ken Wilber. In 2024 I published the Hungarian edition of my popular science book, Neuroverse, which gives an insight into the gigantic neural network that makes up our brain, including popular topics such as neuroplasticity, brain waves, and the mechanism of action of neuromodulators and psychoactive substances.

During the evolution of the human brain, more and more sophisticated neural structures appeared on the lower levels of the UR quadrant of the AQAL matrix. Later, in the course of the history of humankind, the emergence of languages and later literacy has also changed the brain, areas with new functions appearing in the neocortex. Nowadays the world-wide web and social media platforms have the same effect. Neuroplasticity makes it possible to change the structure of our brain by exercise and integral practice – higher states of consciousness can be achieved.

Neuromodulators are hormones that have a crucial influence on brain function. The most important are the four happy chemicals: dopamine which regulates motivation, serotonin responsible for satisfaction, endogenous opiates that control pain relief, and oxytocin, which creates loving connection. Most of the psychoactive substances are mind-altering agents that affect the function of neuromodulators, while some of them also have sedative effects. Their ritual use in the form of entheogens appeared in tribal cultures (W2) thousands of years ago. When consumed under appropriate conditions, they can induce altered states of consciousness. In modern times (W5-6), their consumption has become an epidemic, and they pose a danger of addiction due to excessive use. Alternative methods to increase the levels of neuromodulators and achieve higher-level states of consciousness are recommended.

Neuroplasticity means that the structure of the brain changes constantly by strengthening or weakening the synaptic connections between neurons. It is also the basis of functioning of memory and learning. It works throughout our lives, although it is most intense before the age of 25. There are chemicals produced in the brain and, to a lesser extent, in other parts of the body that intensify its function. Their production can be enhanced through various practices and exercises, including meditation, and can be incorporated into an integral lifestyle. Important skills are perseverance (practice makes perfect), and the power of imagination and dreams (imagine and you can achieve it).

In the past few decades scientists have discovered a huge number of new facts regarding to the operation of the nervous system. A lot of them fit well into the upper right quadrant of the AQAL system. Some of these are described in the presentation.

On the successive Wilberian levels, new structures appear in the brain and different neuromodulators (hormones) influencing the quality of brain function become dominant at different stages of development. The polyvagal theory focuses on the lower levels, as a reliable neurological base is necessary for the healthy development of the brain. And neuroplasticity, one of the most amazing features of our brain, gives us the opportunity to consciously move up on the ladder, even toward transpersonal stages.
