The Emerging Post-Progressive Perspective in American Politics
To restore functionality to American politics, and civility to American culture, rather than seeking nonexistent common ground, Americans need to find a new kind of higher ground, which an integral or “post-progressive” perspective provides. Because this emerging post-progressive perspective is effectively positioned outside and above the contemporary political continuum of left and right, it can reconcile and harmonize America’s competing worldviews, and thereby restore the minimum degree of social solidarity and political cooperation necessary for a functional democracy.
As discussed in my 2020 book: Developmental Politics, the post-progressive political perspective gives rise to an enlarged and inclusive cultural container—one that can integrate the full spectrum of positive American values. Through its new practices of cultural intelligence and values integration, this emerging perspective helps evolve consciousness by increasing the scope of what people can value.
